Welcome to the future!

I am now one of millions of people who have a smartphone. It's an LJ Optimus T, to be precise. I'm powered by Android, whoooo! ...Except I am still totally confused by this thing. Can I assign ringtones? I've tried to figure that out, but I'm coming up blank. There's no option for it in my "contacts" section. And I can't get my Yahoo e-mail account to hook up to the mail feature, so now I have a GMail address which I can access through the phone, but I don't want to have to switch to GMail because I've been using the same Yahoo account since, like, 1997. Oh, technology, you vex me so!

Seriously, though, if any of you know how to assign ringtones to certain people, let me know.

In other news, I have finally "read" the first of the Harry Potter books. And by "read," I mean that I listened to the audiobook while on the way to Ohio last weekend. I'm also a quarter of the way into Catching Fire, which is also good. And speaking of books, anyone who's read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, could you explain the appeal for me? My sister-in-law and I watched the movie (because we'd heard it was good, and EVERYONE we know is reading the books), and we wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Honestly, I don't get it. Why does everyone thing Lisbeth Salander is so damn awesome? She's totally effed up. And I didn't find the plot all that entertaining, or hard to figure out. And oooooh, the girl who disappeared left because she was molested by her dad and brother, who were NAZIS. How edgy. :| I don't know, it just kind of grossed me out. Between the thing I just mentioned in the spoiler, and Lisbeth's rape, and then Lisbeth randomly having sex with Mikael, I just... It just left me feeling like I needed a shower. Are the books as creepy/dull as the movie?

Not much else to say, really. It's almost Valentine's Day, so I'll wish all of you a happy one now. Whether you spend the day with someone romantically, are enjoying it with family, or are spending it with friends (human or four-footed and furry), may you have a wonderful day filled with love.

I can use different ring tones on my phone, iirc (I never do, so I didn't pay much attention), but I can't customize my message alerts, so I'm stuck choosing from the stupid ones the Evo offers. And the more I hear about those books, the less interest I have in reading them.

As for Valentines Day, I'll be at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, so I'm going to be with lots of four-footed furry creatures. *g*

I managed to change my message alert so that it's R2-D2 whistling and beeping. I feel that's appropriate, seeing as how my phone is an Android (emphasis on the "droid").

Yeah, I have no interest in reading them, either. I read an article in EW several years ago all about the books and how great they are, and how everyone is all excited for the American remakes of the movies. And then there was a sidebar from another author, saying that s/he wished Steig Larson was still alive so s/he could ask him about the "anti-women" undercurrent. As much as everyone cheers for Lisbeth, the girl is sexually manipulated and raped, and then hops into bed with anyone and everyone, it seems. She only gains power through violence, and her self-respect (at least, to me) appears to be in the crapper. And also, I heard one woman is choked to death when someone shoves a maxi pad down her throat? Yeah, that's not entertaining for me. From the first movie alone, I really did pick up on a strong anti-woman vibe. Icky.

Changing topics entirely, I am SO JEALOUS that you'll be at the dog show! I LOVE dog shows! Every time I see the commercial on TBS, I get all excited. (I believe they show a Shiba tail in it, too.) Have fun!!!

Not only are they obviously hideously (and imo, just from hearig about them, gratuitously) violent toward women, they're also apparently badly written in ways that can't be blamed on the translator: long passages of pointlessness, and endless useless details about every effing thing in the universe. Ugh.

I'm really looking forward to Westminster! And I thought it was a Shiba tail in the commercial, too, but I've rewound and watched it in slo-mo, and it's not furry enough and the dog's coat is too short and flat. I'm not sure what breed it is, but I'm very disappointed that a Shiba didn't make it into the bigtime. (At least there's a Shiba in a cool Pedigree - I think it's Pedigree - commercial.)

Don't get me started on those Stieg Larsson books. I will happily describe for you at great length how much and exactly why I hated them :P (I understand the movies are something of an improvement on the books, if only because they deleted some of the endless verbiage and product placement. If you didn't actually know the contents of every single sandwich, size of cups of coffee, and times people went to the bathroom, then the movie was definitely better than the book.

HA! You're the second person I know who complained about the minutae of those books. She even complained about the detail of the sandwiches, too. Heh.

And if the movies are an improvement, I can't even imagine what the books are like. Dear God...

From the Contact's page for someone, press the "Menu" button, then select "Options" from the menu. The first item in the options menu should be Ringtone.

You can access Yahoo mail by going to the Market, searching for "Yahoo", and downloading the free "Yahoo! Mail" app.

O~

I'm with you, babe. The Dragon Tattoo movie squicked me out so much that there's no way in heck I'll ever read those books. Life is too short and there are too many other great books I haven't gotten to yet.
