I just got back from seeing Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events with [livejournal.com profile] xica_s, [livejournal.com profile] fava_bean, and [livejournal.com profile] boannan. I gotta say, thumbs up to this one. While the movie didn't match the books exactly, I gotta give a lot of credit to them for staying close enough to the source material to make me happy. The feel of the stories is definitely there, thanks muchly to Jude Law as Lemony Snicket himself. Liam Aiken is great as Klaus (even without the glasses), I loved Emily Browning as Violet, and the twins who played Sunny were just adorable. Also, you've got to give the toddlers credit for constantly topping Jim Carrey. And for those of you who hate Jim Carrey, he's not too much in the movie. When you first meet his Count Olaf, he's totally gradiose and ridiculous, but as the movie goes on the character kind of settles in. And Carrey's turn as Stefano absolutely cracked me up, although I have no idea why. Sure, Captain Sham has the fun Newfie accent and all, but Stefano's the bit that killed me. Maybe it was the moustache. And Billy Connelly broke my heart as Uncle Monty (one of my favorite characters), and Meryl Streep is adorable. If anything, the movie looks great. The sets are gorgeous, the costumes (by Colleen Atwood) are fabulous, and even the lighting pretties it up. I would definitely recommend this to my friends.

eee1313: (Buffy - You stink)
According to the clock on my computer, it's 9:35 a.m. on a Saturday. And yet my neighbors upstairs are vacuuming and stomping around. Why on Earth do they always insist on vacuuming -- the loudest chore there is -- before noon on a Saturday? That's so inconsiderate! If I weren't already awake, I'd be pissed.
