In the news...
Jul. 27th, 2006 03:12 pmDisney to return to hand-drawn animation. This news pleases me a lot. A lot. The claim that 2D animation doesn't draw in audiences anymore is bull. The reason Pixar, and now Dreamworks and Warner Bros., do better than Disney has nothing to do with the style of animation, but the STORY. Seriously, how do the people at Disney not understand this? Their movie empire was born and built on mostly one thing: fairy tales. Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, these were the stories that kept Disney afloat. And if they strayed from the fairy tale genre, children's stories were the way to go (see Pinnochio, The Jungle Book, etc.). The studio went downhill in the 60s and 70s because they went away from that format, and the studio was revived in the 80s and 90s with a return to fairy tales. The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast were the second Golden Age of Disney. And then, rather than sticking with fairy tales, they went back off the path. No one wants an animated movie about history (Pocahontas), a watered-down cautionary tale of prejudice and religous intolerance (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), or futurized visions of childhood classics (Treasure Planet). So IMO, a return to fairy tales is the way to go. And the fact that they're doing the Frog Princess makes me extremely happy, as I've always loved this story. (If anyone happens to know where I can find a version illustrated by Greg Hildebrandt, or know of an old copy of Greg Hildebrandt's Favorite Fairy Tales, I'd love you forever.) Let's hope that they don't hose the storyline, thus giving critics more reason to think it's the medium that's killing the studio, and not the shoddy "let's cater to everyone and ruin the plot" factor that's really the crux of the issue.
Teens use mothballs to get high. Okay, first off, gross. Secondly, it causes scaly skin? I don't care how high you get, if you come out of it looking like a lizard, it ain't worth it. Finally, ew.
Arrested Development to be streamed online for free. This show was awesome. All of you should watch it (if you haven't before) if only to see how they managed to tie up every single loose plotline that was ever on the show at the end of the third season. It's amazing to see how they wove it all back together. Brilliant. Freakin' brilliant.
This just in! Justin supports Lance! Here's a question: why does Lance need Justin's support? And it's not like these guys are ever going to record together again. And what about JC's reaction? And Chris? Whatever happened to Chris?
How did the Taste of Galesburg (in Illinois) end up higher on the Google News top stories than Andrea Yates? And why is it listed next to a picture titled Dog Flu Diets and Diseases?
