The Hangover
May. 19th, 2009 09:12 amLast night I went to a preview screening of The Hangover, thanks to my friend Steve@theMovies. The movie doesn't come out till June 5, and supposedly ours was the first screening in Chicago. After the movie, Steve hosted a Q&A with Bradley Cooper, who flew in for the Chicago press junket. Unfortunately the crowd was rather dead for the Q&A, which Steve had been afraid of. He had the Scientist and I show up with questions ready in case the audience sucked, which they did, so we both asked him stuff to keep the ball rolling. (I think the reason the Q&A was lame was because the "junior league" of the Chicago Film Festival hosted this, rather than past screenings I've attended where Ain't It Cool News hosted. At an AICN screening, you get a ton of fanboys (and girls) who are really into the movie, into film in general, into the actors. At this event, there were a bunch of Chads and Trixies all dressed to the nines and ready for the afterparty at Rockit Bar & Grill, rather than people who were there because they're geeks for movies.) On the bright side, Bradley Cooper seemed very genial and friendly, and told a few funny anecdotes. He also stayed completely tight-lipped about Green Lantern, so no news there.
As for the movie itself, it was much funnier than I expected. It is raunchy as all get-out, and there's some stuff at the very end which I think should have shot this movie from an R rating over to an NC-17, but who knows how the MPAA works. It's kind of Dude, Where's My Car for adults, with a mass blackout, crazy stuff happening again and again and again, and a race against time. Basically, four guys go to Vegas for a bachelorette party, and they wake up the next day to find the groom missing. That's it. But there's such crazy stuff happening in the background, you just kind of hang on for the ride and laugh at stuff that's really horrible and hysterical and nauseating. Besides Bradley Cooper, the movie also stars Ed Helms from The Office, Heather Graham (who is cute and didn't make me want to punch her as per usual), a ton of comedic actors you'll recognize from other smaller projects, and Zach Galifianakis as the TOTAL scene stealer. He plays the brother of the bride, and he's kind of a literal man-child, who may be mentally slow or a complete genius living in his own world. Galifianakis goes WAY BEYOND good taste, and because of this he owns the movie. Truly hysterical.
So I'd recommend this movie if you're in the mood for a completely implausible story with crazy twists and raunchy humor that will make you laugh while possibly being really offended. Also, BIG recommendation for Galifianakis' comedic acting. And Bradley Cooper ain't bad to look at, either.
