Flooding

So you've heard about the crazy-bad flooding in Rhode Island, right? Well, my sister's got it. Her basement flooded two weeks ago with the last major storm, and just as they were recovering from that, they got hit again. As of last night when I talked with her, there's 13 inches of standing water in her basement. They have three pumps going non-stop, and the water level isn't receding. She already had to shut off her furnace (thank God they have a fireplace upstairs they can use for heat), they have no hot water, they may not be able to use any water -- including toilets, their electricity may be shut off, and they may be forced to evacuate to a shelter.

Needless to say, if you could spare some good juju and send it [livejournal.com profile] yakgirl's way, I'm sure she'd appreciate it.

Things are looking better for [livejournal.com profile] yakgirl, but things in her town are looking worse. It seems that a dam about 1/2 mile from her house may break at any moment, which means that there will be "catastrophic flooding" in her town. Hundreds of people are being evacuated. Luckily my sister's house is at a much higher elevation than the river (seriously, where she lives in RI is crazy-hilly, especially for a Midwesterner like me). So other than basement flooding her house will be fine, unlike the people at the bottom of her hill.

My concern right now is that all the roads leading OFF of her hill are being shut down. I asked if she's even going to be able to leave her neighborhood if the dam breaks, and she doesn't know. But the water in their basement has gone down to just a few inches, and their electricity is still going. Right now they have to shower at the neighbors' house (still no hot water), but as she said they're much better off than a lot of people in their area. While I was talking to her on the phone earlier, she saw eight deer run past their backyard, almost certainly in search of dry ground. Poor deer, there's no emergency shelter for them.

yakgirl sent me a link to the local news report on the flooded river and potential dam break. Right now, the force of the water is so strong that it sheared off one side of a building. Damn! And dam.

In the meantime, she and her boys are comparing the state of their town to this scene from Ponyo. Good thing the boys are enjoying it.

RIGHT NOW, Cartoon Network's [Adult Swim] is playing The Room! THE ROOM!!! More terrible than The Apple, and it's on my TV! I am freakishly excited by the sight of Tommy Wisseau on basic cable.

The best part is that they're employing the use of black bars during the sex scenes. BLACK BARS! Who uses THOSE to censor anything anymore? It just adds to the hilarity. This is the best editing for TV since they added cartoon bras to Nomi in Showgirls. (Note to those who have seen the movie: when Wisseau's ass is displayed prominently, the black bar filled literally 7/8 of the screen and was just a giant black square. BWA!)

Best April Fool's prank on TV ever!!!
