eee1313: (P&P - Darcy)

I had dreams about Mr. Darcy last night, hence the icon. Actually, it was me watching a new interpretation of Pride & Prejudice in play form, starring Keifer Sutherland. But halfway through the performance the producers realized Keifer sucked as Darcy and replaced him with Colin Firth. All was well.

Right now I'm at the Scientist's place, listening to a show on the History Channel about moonshiners and bootleggers. At one point they were talking about "monkey rum," which reminded me of [livejournal.com profile] spicedrum.

Yesterday morning the Scientist and I bought some packing tape, bubble wrap, and Sharpies and headed into the city to Steve & Jenni's. Their block is a disaster zone. 100-year-old trees were lifted out of the ground, ripping up the earth along with their roots. Bricks, branches, lumber, and insulation are everywhere. Moving vans have lined their street, because so many people have to move out. Behind their house is a warehouse-type building. One corner of the building has caved in, and the 2-ton air conditioning unit on the roof was ripped off and sent smashing into the electrical wires. This sent off a chain reaction which pulled down one electrical pole and sent it right through someone's windshield.

They're saying it's a microburst that hit their area. Poor Jenni was home at the time and ended up hiding in a closet. She said that the wind just hit instantly and the whole building shifted, and she could hear everything swirling around outside and hitting the building. Afterwards, she saw water coming through from the condo upstairs, and then the steady drip became a full-on waterfall. The kitchen and back bedroom are soaked through in patches, and dry in other areas. It's a total crapshoot. By the end of the day, over 150 boxes had been packed and moved to the front (dry) area of the condo to be moved. Their building has been deemed structurally unsound, and they'll be moved to a "corporate apartment" type temporary home for anywhere from 3 to 6 months. It's just such a shame, because their condo really was beautiful. The Scientist had never been there before, and afterwards he was like, "Man, that place was GORGEOUS. What a shame..." But it felt really good to help them out as much as we could. Those two are great.

Afterwards it took us about an hour to make it from the north side back to the OP, as the highway was turned into a literal parking lot. Ridiculous. Then we went back to his place, turned on the AC, and then went to his brother's place for their yearly block party. We relaxed for a bit by drinking his "Grandma's Apple Pie," which is homemade booze that tastes like apple pie soaked in Everclear. That was his last bottle until they make a new batch this fall, but it was a bottle from 2003. I swear, about 80 proof. AWESOME. But we were too tired to stay for too long, so we headed home and promptly crashed out.

And now he's off at work, and I'm hanging out here doing laundry all day. And then I'll head home and sleep.
