My mom always bitches that she learned in her History of Costume Design and other fashion merchandising classes that the Pilgrims liked color. They didn't run around wearing just black and navy. Maybe on the men's suits, but she swears that the women wore colors. Honestly, it never makes sense to me that period dramas are always dull colored, all browns and grays and sepia-toned. Maybe it's so that our "modern brains" will equate what we're seeing in movies as "oldsy-timesy" or some crap. But really, if the ancient Egyptians knew how to dye fabric and paint, then why wouldn't people from 200 years ago. Durrrrr.
(Side note: for the most part, the reason I hate almost all Westerns is that I hate hate hate the color scheme used in those movies. Not surprisingly, my mom feels the same way.)
if you go down to the bottom of that page, there's a link to s series of color photos taken in the Russian Empire from 1909-1915.
I am going to check that out now! Thanks for pointing it out!
