Ganked from
blunaris...
If I needed to communicate the essence of my person and my soul but only had a cardboard box and a choice of thirteen objects in which to do this, here is what I would assemble:
1. Pinky. He's the teddy bear I got when I was a baby, and he's gone everywhere with me. Family vacations, slumber parties as a child, and always held a spot of honor on my pillow. That was, until I got my cat, because she likes to grab him by the throat, drag him around the house, and try to rip out his stuffing with her claws. Now he's on the dresser.
2. My very first Nightmare Before Christmas snowglobe. This was the first one I got, and seeing as how it also plays "This is Halloween," I've also managed to sneak in my Danny Elfman obsession along with my NBX obsession. Ha! Double whammy!
3. My backpack. I don't use it all that much anymore, but it has a lot of memories. I got it when my family went on a trip to Switzerland via my dad's company. In gold lettering across the back it reads "MOPAR Winning Lifestyles," which was the organization that set up the trips for the top selling employees. I used this bag all throughout college, toting books and binders and crap in it. It wasn't until after I graduated that a friend asked me, "So, how many did you have to use to win the backpack?" I didn't get it, and she pointed out that the slogan was printed nearly the exact same was as Lifestyles condoms. So I'd been trekking all over UIUC with that bag, and people probably thought I was a massive ho. Whoops. That's when I started sewing patches onto my bag to cover the lettering. I always try to get a patch from a place I'm vacationing, so I've got ones from Switzerland and Palm Springs (I had one from Salem, Mass, but I lost it somewhere), and patches for Buffy, Daria, and a Superman one (I also had a Tyrell Industries patch from Blade Runner, but I lost that, too). I also have my dad's air traffic controller patch from when he was in the USMC that I want to sew on, along with the patch I made for my friend's deployment in Saudi Arabia when he was in the USMC.
4. My cell phone. Every person I know and love has their name and number in that phone. Er, at least, every person I know and love who gave me their number, that is. I don't go anywhere without it. Unless I lock it in my car. :o
5. A photograph taken at my sister's wedding of the whole family. Me, my parents, my sister and her new husband. I have it framed and on my desk here at work. It's the one picture I always have on my desk at work, no matter what job it's been.
6. A disk containing a copy of my book. I've never bothered to try to get it published, but I'm proud of it. Even if I did find out I completely ripped off the story from The Lord of the Rings, even though I had never read the books or seen any adaptation of it before writing my story. (Does this mean I'm as good as Tolkein? Yes. Yes, it does.)
7. My prom dress. I love my prom dress. LOVE IT. My mom made it for me, and it is completely tailored to fit my body like a glove, and it's beautiful. Floor length black, spaghetti straps, with off-the-shoulder bell sleeves made out of this weird rope-like black lace. I've never felt more beautiful than I did that night. Plus, I've worn it on several different Halloweens, because it's a great vampire costume once you pop some fangs in your mouth. ;)
8. The silver ring that Biscuit gave me the last time he came to visit. Ever since then, I've worn it nearly every single day. I look at it, and I think of him. And thinking of him makes me think of
player_mcsleeze, and then my old coworkers Shawna and Suzanne, since we all used to work together. I miss them. But especially Biscuit and player_mcsleeze.
9. The CD my friend Val made for me, entitled "Room 422's Greatest Hits." I didn't get a whole lot out of the dorm experience, but I did get the most wonderful roommate in the world. We got along like cats on fire,* and after we moved into separate apartments she made me a disc to remind me of our time in a little 10 x 12 room. It always takes me back to my first year at UIUC, and I'm happy.
10. A bottle of my favorite perfume, L'Eau d'Issey. I always wanted it but couldn't afford it, but finally got a bottle from a friend. Wheeeee! I only wear it on really, really, really, really special occassions, so the smell always takes me somewhere nice. Also, I am a perfume fiend.
11. A photo of my cat. When I got her, that's when I knew I was becoming a grownup. Cats live a really freakin' long time, so Sassy could potentially be around when I get married and have kids. That's a weird thought. So yeah, becoming solely responsible for a living being is a big step, and becoming responsible for something that will be with you for longer than a decade -- possibly two -- is pretty weird as well. Plus, I love my cat. LOVE. HER.
12. One of my art portfolios. I have two in my trunk right now, filled with artwork from senior year of high school through senior year of college. There's some great stuff in there. I would want people to see it. (I'm actually thinking of scanning a bunch of it and putting it up on my website. But I'm a procrastinator, so who knows if/when that will ever happen.)
13. I'm at a loss for 13, so I'll put in the charm bracelet that
sunbrae made for me last year. It's kind of a Buffy thing, but more of an online friends kind of thing. Wearing it reminds me of the fun times I had working on Dancing Lessons, and how many good friends I've made out of the experience, and my online fandom experience as a whole. It's funny, because I'm not really so much into Buffy anymore, but I'm certainly into my online friends. So yeah, count that as 13.
* Yes, I know the phrase is "houses on fire," but once I messed up and said "cats on fire" and kind of liked it, so I stuck with it.

Date: 2004-04-30 06:55 pm (UTC)I could make new ones with charms that represent lj people instead of Buffy characters. Hmmm...
