Jul. 28th, 2007 10:27 amMom just called. My grandma is in the hospital right now. Uncle Joe has been taking care of her for the past few days, and when he called me the other night and left a message he sounded exhausted. He said things were "really bad" with Grandma, but he didn't say why, and asked me not to call in case I woke her up. Mom just informed me that by "really bad," what's been going on is that my grandma's been trying to go down the stairs, has tried flushing my grandpa's diaries down the toilet... In other words, she's lost it. She hasn't tried to go down stairs on her own in about fifteen years. She needs someone to spot her the whole time because she'll fall. So the fact that she's trying to do it on her own is bad news. I guess someone has to watch her all the time because of this now. Between this and Grandma shoving my cousin last weekend, my mom and uncle are at their wits' ends.
So Uncle Joe and Mom talked, and talked to the homes in the area. The really nice assisted living home probably won't take her any more because she's gone off the deep end, and needs constant supervision now. So it's going to be a depressing, crappy nursing home for her. The doctors recommended taking her to the hospital for a psych evaluation, which was the plan. And then she fell last night, so Uncle Joe just called the paramedics and took her straight to the hospital to wait for the geriatric psychologist (who comes in at noon today). I guess he stayed there all night, and is now home sleeping. Mom and Dad are going up later today, I don't really know what for.
But yeah, it seems like my Grandma's dementia has blown up into full-on crazy. Perfect timing, too. As Mom said, "When it rains, it pours."
