Why my morning was ruined
May. 28th, 2009 11:22 amThis morning on the way to work I was harassed by another driver on the highway. There weren't many people on the road when I merged on, so I waited in the slow lane for the cars to pass, and then signaled to cross the traffic into the fast lane. Once there, I accelerated to my usual 70 mph cruising speed. At this point, a blue Jeep next to me started to speed up as well. At first I thought it was just someone on their cell phone not paying attention, which is often the case when drivers fluctuate their speed. So I continued to speed up to pass him. The other driver sped up as well. At this point I was nearing 80 mph, so I decided to just drop back and let the dumbass continue on, and I'd drop back behind him into the middle lane. As I lifted off the gas, the other driver did too, all the way down to 60 mph. At this point, I became fully aware that the other driver was purposely blocking me in the fast lane, so I looked over at him with a WTF face.
At this point, I saw he had put a big "SOCIALISM" sign in his driver's side window, with the Obama O logo as the O in socialism. He was sneering at me and giving me the finger. All because I have an Obama "Vote for Change" sticker on the back of my car. Nice. Real nice.
I just turned back to look at the highway and sped up again. As before, he started matching my speed. I didn't bother to look at him again, as I wasn't going to give him the satisfaction. So I just continued to accelerate, and he did as well. At this point I was pissed, because this was accounting for road rage on his part. So I floored it up to 90 and sped off. If a cop had pulled me over, I had a damn good excuse, as I was being harassed via vehicle and was trying to escape a hostile driving situation. Thankfully at this point the guy was done messing with me and let off the gas.
When I finally pulled off the highway at my exit, who should be behind me but Mr. Socialism himself. He continued to laugh at me and make faces, but I chose to just ignore him. Then, at the stoplight, he started giving me the finger again. His socialism sign was out of his window, so I know for a fact that's what he was harassing me about, as it wasn't a permanent fixture on his car. I just drove off when I got my green turn arrow.
Seriously, though, WTF? Who does something like this? Who is so insecure and angry about his political situation that he creates a hostile and potentially dangerous situation on the highway? Who feels the need to harass complete strangers over something like a bumper sticker? Honestly. My question is, if I run into this guy on the road again, what do I do? Am I allowed to call the highway patrol over something like this? Because he takes the same route to work as I do, and I'll be damned if I'll put up with his behavior repeatedly. Also, I don't like being threatened when I've done nothing wrong. Especially at 70 mph.
And on a final note, I was going to take the sticker off my car the next time I wash it. Now, I'm thinking I'll keep it just so that this guy doesn't think he's won.
