eee1313: (Serenity - go see it)

So I'm sitting here watching reruns of Friends on TBS, and who's playing the divorce lawyer for Ross & Rachel? None other than Shepherd Book himself, Ron Glass! Awww, he's all gravelly-voiced and trying to make Ross get therapy. Always with the advice, Shepherd.

Needless to say, I'm kind of down about Serenity coming in at ninth place at the box office this past weekend. What the hell, America? You go see movies like Flightplan for three weeks in a row, but you're not willing to give a fun movie like Serenity a chance? I've seen it four times already, people. I've done my part! It's your turn already. ...I wanted my sequel, dammit.

I felt slightly better when I realized that even Cameron Diaz in mainstream fare with Shirley McClain couldn't beat Flightplan. And it did slightly worse in its first week than Serenity did. It really does seem like ticket sales in general are just really down right now.

Yup. I hope that's taken into consideration when (if) talks about a sequel happen. On the upside, it's almost a good thing that this movie had a relatively tiny budget. Because if they had blown $100 million making this, and it had the box office returns that it did, then it would be dubbed a flop. But as it is, the movie is still holding its own fairly well. (And the UK is helping quite a bit, too!)

Yeah, I think it was Entertainment Weekly who when they did their Box Office Report last week were like, "It made back a quarter of its budget in 3 days, so you Whedon fans can take your heads out of the oven." I'm not sure if it'll get a sequel, but between it's low budget and the inevitable blockbuster DVD sales, I don't think this will at all go down as a flop.

You know, if it doesn't get a sequel, I think I'm okay with that. Because really, this was a good way to wrap things up, and a nice capper on it all. Funny how the movie ends pretty much the same way the pilot episode ended, with the whole "We're still flying" concept. That makes me happy.

You know, if the movie pulls in a good amount of money in the theaters and DVD sales, there's always a chance they could do a sequel. If they do a smaller story without as many space battles (and less actors to pay), it could technically be done. And as someone else said, if Joss makes enough cash for the studio with Wonder Woman, he'll have a lot more pull to get another Firefly-verse movie made. That said, I won't be holding my breath.

Because Serenity isn't playing around here! If I had the money and time, I would have gone to see Flightplan again because Sean Bean is The Extra Special Hott (with two Ts) in it.

That's so annoying. It's a really well-reviewed movie, especially for its genre, and I can't believe it's still not playing everywhere. Now I fear that it won't hit your town at all till the DVD comes out. There are probably a lot of places like yours, too. :(

Don't give up on the sequel yet. It shot straight to the top in Britain, where the movie audiences as a whole are apparently smarter and more discerning than ours. Plus, the DVD sales should be brisk, as they were with the series DVDs.

If some mouth-breathing suit can greenlight American Pie: Band Camp then surely somebody at Universal can be convinced to make a sequel to one of the better-reviewed movies of the year, and the best-reviewed sci-fi film in a really, really long time.

Good points. And I guess that the second-week dropoff for Serenity wasn't as much as the Hollywood suits predicted. For a scifi movie, I guess this is the best (ie, least) amount of dropoff for this genre since Attack of the Clones. Now if only all of the people who saw that POS would go see Serenity instead...

I'm sad, too. I've seen it twice, HHH once, and betwixt us we've dragged 5 newbies to see it, so we're doing our part.... But damn, it's depressing. It's a great movie, with outstanding reviews, and it even had marketing behind it (until it opened - I haven't seen a single ad since), but - nothing.

Maybe Joss shouldn't have named his sci-fi space-cowboy action movie a synonym for "calm."

I've been seeing ads for it since it opened. They changed their commercials entirely to say "Two thumbs up!" and all sorts of other praise from real critics. Not just a quote with a credit line hidden at the bottom, but "Ebert and Roper say..." "The New York Times calls Serenity..." That type of thing. So yeah, Universal is giving it a critics-love-it push.

I think overall this movie is going to kick ass in DVD sales/rentals. And seeing as how that's where Hollywood really seems to be making a lot of money these days, it might be a good thing. But still, it is disheartening that people aren't giving this a chance to really break out.

Heh. I realized after I wrote that that maybe the reason I haven't seen any ads is because I haven't watched any commercial TV other than The Daily Show since "Serenity" opened....

The DVD sales will, of course, kick ass, but I just really wish more people were seeing this movie.... and whenever I try to sell someone on it, they keep stumbling over and forgetting the name. sigh.
