First and foremost, [livejournal.com profile] xica_s, did you know they're doing a remake of The Women, this time with Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Debra Messing and Candice Bergen? This is just one more example of how much Hollywood sucks. The original is PRICELESS. Why remake it when there's nothing wrong with it? At least Ocean's Eleven cleaned up the story and improved on it, as did The Thomas Crown Affair. But why remake a movie that's already GOOD? Is it just that people are too idiotic to watch a black and white movie nowadays? Do we only want technicolor and stars we know, rather than going back to what was made before the days of Spielberg and Bruckheimer to see what was great decades earlier? You know they're going to change dialogue, plot points, etc. They should just keep the screenplay as it was before, and film it with new actresses if they have to remake it. Bleh. Stupid Hollywood. Stop remaking perfectly good movies! Everyone else, go watch more TCM.

(Speaking of TCM, tonight it's North by Northwest and at 2 am they're playing the Monkees bizarro-movie Head followed by the Who's Tommy. Sunday night they're showing The Wizard of Oz, followed by Spirited Away. Gotta love that station.)

In other movie news, Knocked Up is coming out today. I know several of you on my flist are gunning for this movie, and I have to wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone else. My friend Steve@theMovies said this of the film: "if you don't have the time of your life watching this movie, there's something horribly wrong with you." I tend to agree. This movie is great. Very funny, well-written, smart and realistic characters, I could go on. There are two parts of this movie that really stick with me: the delivery scene (there's a LOT that you won't expect to happen there, as the trailers and commercials barely scratch the surface of the scene), and a Cirque du Soliel joke that KILLED me, probably because I've seen Cirque du Soliel and know how freakin' weird it can be.

Knocked Up is currently running 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty damn good. The 40-Year-Old Virgin capped at 83%, so if you thought that was a damn funny film, you should LOVE Knocked Up. But seeing as how I've already seen it, I think that this weekend I may try to hit a theater that's playing Waitress. Hello, it's Felicity, Captain Tightpants, and Elton from Clueless. What's not to love?

I love The Women! And will refuse to see the remake, just like I refused to see the remake of Sabrina. What's next: Casablanca????

The waitress is good and full of actors I really like from past works, including Andy Griffith and Perry from Scrubs sister!

The remake of Sabrina is way better than the original and you do not get all antifeminist stuff!

Really? I may have to check it out, though I adore the original what with Audrey Hepburn, her clothes, Humphrey Bogart, William Holden and the use of a 1950s car phone in that movie.

Yay, I love anonymous posters! Matt, is that you?

I have to admit that I really liked the remake of Sabrina, but everyone ragged on how much it sucked compared to the original. But then I finally saw the original and I was kind of appalled, especially when Sabrina tried to kill herself because David didn't like her. Wuh-huh? As for the whole "Sabrina is a wonderful cook and will make food to win Linus over" angle, I can deal with that crap. I just chalk that up to a different era.

I probably would have enjoyed this movie much more if Cary Grant had played Linus instead of Bogart, as was the original plan. I never got the Bogart love. Harrison Ford is infinitely more likable as Linus, IMO. In the end, the new version of Sabrina is more watchable for me. It also makes me very nostalgic for Paris, which is an added bonus.

I didn't much care for EITHER Sabrina, but the "wacky" suicide attempt in the first one appalled me.

DAMMIT do I want to see Knocked Up. AND Waitress. I haven't seen a film in theatres this year.

Stupid baby. ;)

Damn skippy!

Besides the one movie we made it to over Christmas while the in-laws watched the kids (Night at the Theatre), I cannot remember the last movie we saw in a theatre-- Spider Man II? All I know is, while I may have seen one movie out this year, we picked it to coincide with the baby's nursing schedule. I remember worrying I'd leak through while watching. TMI??? Sorry. But I feel your pain!!!

Heh. Both types of pain, I'd imagine. The lack of movies, and the boob pain, too!!

Why remake it when there's nothing wrong with it?

I heard that they're remaking Adventures in Babysitting, which makes me want to punch Hollywood in its collective face.

I can't wait to see Knocked-up!

And it's starring Raven. She of The Cosby Show and Cheetah Girls and That's So Raven That I Want to Kill Myself.

Seriously, what are they thinking? WHAT???

WTF???

Why? WHY?!?!?!?!?

I can't even begin to explain how sucky that will be, other than to ask about this one plot point-- is everyone in the new flick going to think that RAVEN SIMONE posed in Playboy?!?!?!?

Ewwwwww....

Diane English has been shopping the The Women script for at least 12 years. I remember my friend Mark writing a trivia question about it in 1995. Back then Ryan and Julia Roberts were attached. I think Ryan's been the only constant.

Yup, I know this has been in the works for a while. I was just hoping it wouldn't happen. :(

Ugh. My heart. It hurts. Part of the reason that The Women was so amazing is that it was a look into the lives of women that people hadn't seen before. These women were witty, catty, bitchy, inteligent, and FABULOUS. This supposed remake will have none of the snap of the original (which, in itself is a much watered down version of the original play. There was a revival on Broadway a few years back with Cynthia Nixon as Mary (i LOATHED her in that part btw), Kirsten Johnson as Sylvia, Rue McClanahan as the countess, and the little Pepsi girl as little Mary. It was EXCELLENT). I've been hearing about this remake for YEARS, I'm still hoping it falls apart. They aren't filming yet, are they?

I just got back from seeing Knocked Up and I don't remember the last time I laughed that hard all throughout a movie. I started laughing out loud on the way home while driving on the freeway, and my sister said "The midget again?" "*gasp**heeee*YES!" Damn. Funny movie.

Hey ..
