The other day I was bored at work, and so I started checking in on prices for hotels for our honeymoon. The Scientist and I were thinking of DC/Virginia. However, now that I've realize that hotels in DC are INSANELY EXPENSIVE, I don't think we'll be going there any longer. If we're paying $250 just for a hotel room at night, doesn't it seem more cost-effective to book a vacation or a cruise or something that will cost us around $350-$500 a day? Especially is said vacations include the cost of airfare, food, lodging, and activities? So yeah, now we're changing our plan completely and are looking into other offers.

[livejournal.com profile] yakgirl is going to talk to some friends of hers who go on cruises all the time, and then relay their info back to me. I'm just not sure how I feel about being on a boat and then having to pay for on-shore activities. I also don't feel like having to deal with other travelers' families and children while on my honeymoon, you know? AND the idea of sharing a table at dinner with random strangers just doesn't sound like fun to me.

The idea of an all-inclusive sounds really nice, however. Both of us independently came up with the idea of St. Lucia, as it has beaches, mountains, waterfalls, jungle... But all the St. Lucia resorts are already booked, or a small fortune. I looked into the place that [livejournal.com profile] katesti went to on her honeymoon, but the Scientist wants a place with more activities instead of just lying around on a beach. (Seeing as how both of us are of Irish decent and therefore sunburn pretty easily, the non-beach concept sounds good, too.) But then I started reading forums online, and all signs point to choosing a Couples resort in Jamaica instead of a Sandals resort, and they have more off-site tours and activities involved in the price, so we'll be checking that out online tonight. Seriously, though, does anyone have any experience with this stuff? All-inclusives, cruises, ANYTHING? Your advice would be appreciated.

I really need to start packing and cleaning my apartment. It's such a disaster. I just don't want to do it. [livejournal.com profile] aj, are you interested in making some side money? Just having you over here to help me crack the whip would be helpful enough.

Yesterday I hung out with [livejournal.com profile] fava_bean most of the day. It was really nice. We sat around watching some early How I Met Your Mother episodes that she hadn't seen. We ate fancy cheese and crackers, and talked, and I forced her to watch clips of Yo Gabba Gabba. It was a good time.

I also talked to my other best friend Debbie for a really long time. It's been forever since she and I had a loooong conversation. She's great.

Tomorrow is the Scientist and my one-year dating anniversary. I can't believe it's been a year already. It just doesn't seem like it's been a whole year. I can remember so much of it like it were last week. And yet I can't remember last week at all. Heh.

Let's see what I had to say about him then:

He seems like a genuinely decent, nice guy. He asked if I'd like to go out again, so I said sure. Not really sure if I'm into him (it's not "love at first sight" or any of that crap in the eHarmony commercials), but so far he's nice enough that I'll definitely give him a second date and find out if there's something more. If all else, it's been good conversation so far. ::shrugs::

Man, how things have changed. Anyway, yeah, it's been a year. I have no idea what we're doing tomorrow to celebrate, but he has told me we're going to go to Dave & Buster's to play ski-ball, as that was one of our first dates. So maybe we're doing first date repeats, I don't know. Either way, it will be nice to spend the whole day with him, just having it be all about us.

I know about far away places... I wonder if it would be cost effective to fly to Bangkok? The flight would be more but the accommodation would be so much less. My friend is on his honeymoon right now ins the Caribbean, I can ask him what the deal was. I know Costa Rica has lot of adventure activities as well as beach.

If you like contemporary styling at all, take a look at Quincy Suites in DC for a reasonable room. Both look at their site and Google them, because the comments in Frommer's online are very complimentary and there are more customer pictures there.

my sister and her husband went to an all-inclusive in Jamaica after having gone to st lucia and jamaica without doing an all-inclusive and said that they'd never travel to a place like that again without going all-inclusive. Of course, they got married like a year later and haven't gone anywhere since. *g*

This was over five years ago, but I'll still ask her about it for you and let you know if there is any good information in what she gives me.

We did an all inclusive to Ireland, which took us from Shannon to Dublin and stopped at all the famous pubs along the way. (Yes, we enjoyed our drink, what of it?!) It was kind of hilarious to be bussed around w/ scads of random people, but it was awesome, because it was all one price AND we actually got to see stuff. If we did the tropics thing, we'd just end up sitting on our asses on the beach.

I would also suggest the Outer Banks of the Carolinas -- pretty affordable and options for horseback and hiking and that sort of thing if you're into being outdoorsy.

We did a cruise for our honeymoon. It turned out to be more fun than I expected it to be. But it can be expensive between the booze, the extras, the airfare, etc.

Know anyone with a timeshare someplace you might want to visit? Or look into a vacation rental and/or corporate apartments instead of a hotel - we just did that in Seattle and it was much cheaper than a hotel.

Congrats on everything Scientist-related! I've only been posting to lj since Spring and, sad to admit, not checking the flist. So it was with glee to see the info that you're well on your way to marriedness!

In regards to places to stay in DC...I've stayed at some very basic bed and breakfasts in DC, not too far from the zoo, for pretty cheap. Around $50 a night. Mind, they're pretty basic. If you're interested I can get the info for you.

I can tell you that flying to SE Asia is going to cost ~$1200. I've done it about 3 times know and it always ends up being that much. However, it is fabulous.

Try Puerto Rico, its cheap and relatively close by. My wife and I went there about a year and half ago and it was great. The weather was perfect and the hotel and food were both cheap. Plus there is plenty to do.

I swear, just 'cause we were lazy bums on our honeymoon doesn't mean there wasn't stuff to do. There was stuff on-site, and Playa del Carmen and other kinds of interesting stuff were all really close and easy to get to (the resort had a contract with a tour company, and you could also do stuff independently). Plus - beach beds! Are shady!

OMG I want to go back RIGHT NOW PLZ.
