I am a homeowner. We got through the closing just fine (despite some problems earlier in the day that required a rep from the bank to hand-deliver the cashier's check), and now we have keys. 3 out of 4 keys, though. Burt, the Agent from Hell, didn't take the house key out of the real estate agent lockbox on the door. How the hell do you close on a house without all the keys??? But whatever, we have a house.
Last night we spent about 4½ hours stripping wallpaper. The highlights include...
* The Scientist singing "I hate wallpaper" to the tune of Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy."
* Me talking dirty to the wallpaper. For example, "That's right, you dirty bitch. You peel it off. Peel it ALL off."
* Me deciding that wallpaper should be called "snot paper" because the sticky adhesive underside that gets left behind feels like wet, used tissues.
* This conversation:
Me: Whoever invented wallpaper should DIE.
The Scientist: Seeing as how wallpaper has been around for hundreds of years, I think the inventor is dead already.
Me: Yeah, well, then he got what he deserved!
So now we have all the wallpaper down in the Pink Room. The walls are pink, the ceiling is pink, the closet is pink, the closet ceiling is pink. Ugh. Of course, stripping the wallpaper also tore off a lot of the paint, leaving exposed drywall underneath. So we're going to be washing walls and doing some repair work tonight. My dad has recommended Gripper, this supposedly amazing project that helps to smooth out walls and act as an undercoat at the same time. So we'll be putting that to the test tonight. Though in some of the bigger areas, I fear spackling may be involved.
I've been a homeowner for less than 24 hours, and already there are repairs. Ugh.
So yeah, that's my life. I am absolutely exhausted. But now I'm taking off both tomorrow and Friday to work on the house, which means I need to get more REAL work done. So I'm wrapping this up.
However, I'd like to wish a very happy birthday to
tiaralynn. She's a Browncoat, an NBX fan, and seriously so much fun. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your birthday today! And I'm so glad that I've gotten to know you since you've started working here. You are great, and deserve a really awesome birthday.

Date: 2007-09-26 09:01 pm (UTC)As for wallpaper, score the everliving hell out of it first. Then soak it with the water/wallpaper remover solution (or water/fabric softener) over and over and over. Just soak the crap out of it. And if it's still not peeling off well, score it some more after it's wet, and then apply more. You can never have the paper wet enough.

Date: 2007-09-26 09:03 pm (UTC)We described it as "Victorian by way of Holly Hobbie." UGH. I am so happy that I'll never have to look at it again, except to haul it to the curb.

Date: 2007-09-28 09:40 pm (UTC)We still have to strip the wallpaper (the pink-with-purple/green/blue/lilac/yellow-Pucci-print-flowers, and yes it's as gawdawful as it sounds, but it cracks me up wallpaper) out of the bathroom. Fortunately it's superthick and maybe fabric, which should peel right off. Then we'll only have to wash down the lilac-colored walls. Ack.
But I still think I envy you. YOU do not have a wall of corkboard. CORKBOARD!!
