I feel the need to post. I feel like I haven't posted anything worthwhile in a while now. I also feel like the last two sentences have a lot of repeated words. Anyway, I'm just going to post about random crap. Enjoy.
Heroes
No one is talking about Heroes on my flist. Is everyone just bored with it? Is everyone just pretending it doesn't exist, because we're all depressed it's not as good as last season? What's up?
Okay, so I'll admit that I don't really care about this season as much. Monica does things she sees on TV! *yawn* Peter has amnesia and an annoying girlfriend with an annoying accent! *yawn* Mohinder is conflicted about working for the Company! *yawn* Hiro has screwed with the past in feudalCalifornia Japan! *yawn* And, saving the best for last, the Jaun-der Twins are still driving to the US and weeping black eye goo! *YAWN*
So yeah, all of that IS sucking, I think everyone pretty much feels that way. BUT there is some good stuff going on that gives me hope. Like, Nathan Petrelli and his melting mirror man alter ego. I don't know what's going on there, but that's pretty cool. And now the whole "we're in the future and everyone's dead" thing starting up next week seems pretty promising. And of course, Noah Bennet kicks ass like the biggest badass on TV. I love him. I love that he's the one without any powers, and yet he's the most intriguing character on the show.
As for Claire, I think the Scientist summed it up the best when he said "She's better than this." Honestly, chasing the head cheerleader with your new psycho flying boyfriend? I can't stand that guy. She knows better than to do what she's doing. Terrible. I am tired of her, and even more tired of him. Even the Juan-der Twins are more watchable for me. Of course, they got infinitely more interesting once they picked up Sylar and he's promised to kill Alejandro. Go, Sylar, go! (And is it just me, or is Zachary Quinto looking like quite the hottie at times?)
Anyway, I hope the show picks up with the new "everyone's dead in the future" plotline.
Halloween
Last night we didn't get home from work until late, and we didn't get any trick-or-treaters. We had left a bowl of candy on the front porch, just in case, and kids had come by. All of the Almond Joys and Hershey's were gone. Who knew kids today aren't fans of Reese's?
Anyway, after dinner we took a trip over to the Scientist's theater, where he knew they were working on skeleton crew. (Not literally, even if it was Halloween.) He gave candy to those who were working, and then we took off to head back home. On the way, we stopped to check out the big haunted house in the neighborhood. For weeks now we've been watching them set up this HUGE structure in the yard. There's a giant 3-walled "house" in the front, with skeletons hanging from chains, and a huge pentagram with a skeleton strapped over it. Strobe lights are everywhere. Then they built an actual haunted house around the side of the house and into the backyard. Last weekend the Scientist saw the police and fire department there, presumably checking the structure to see if it was sound for people to walk through, or if it was a fire trap.
Well, we drove past last night to find a line of teenagers and adults stretched down the block. They were out directing traffic, with cones blocking off part of the street. It was crazy. So we decided to skip that entirely and just go home. Just as we were nearing our street, he told me about another haunted house down one of the sidestreets. As we drove past, I caught a glimpse of the "Haunted Hearse" house. After parking the car, we took a walk over to check it out.
It was so awesome! We were the only ones there (though a few people drove by), so the owner came out to talk with us. He had two hearses in the drive, both of which were fitted with lights and coffins and smoke and stuff. One had a battery/hydraulic thing going on, so that when he pushed a button the back of the hearse opened by itself, a coffin slid out and then opened, revealing a corpse inside who sat up by herself. Too cool! In the upstairs windows of the house were two skeleton-like ghosts with wild hair and torn robes, which he had suspended from the ceiling with a fan blowing on them, and the whole room was lit from below in green. It looked like two creepy ghosts were inside the house haunting it. There were mummies in the windows, a "zombie walk" along one side of the house, with mannequins and animatronic skeletons and zombies and mummies and stuff. Some would make noises or move when you went past. There was a giant robotic rat that would pop out of an overturned trash can as you walked by.
Then, on the front lawn there was a cemetary set up. They did a really good job with it. They had one of those projection TV units set up so that they'd project creepy heads onto a panel of glass behind it, so that it looked like there were floating heads in the air. There was a giant monument reading "Beloved" with a dead corpse bride draped across it. The coolest bit, though, were the real gravestones. The owner told us a great story about how he got them. It seemed someone in a nearby town worked for a monument company. Any time they'd screw up a name or date, this guy would take the granite blocks home. When he had enough, he used them as the base for a deck that he built out back. Well, when the next owners of the house tore down the deck and found all these grave markers underneath, they freaked out. The police came and assured them that their house wasn't really built on an old cemetary, and then the police hauled the gravestones away to sell at the next police auction. This guy picked them all up for $1 a piece, and now he uses them in his fake graveyard for Halloween. Heh.
Anyway, the thing I really liked about this guy's house was that it was FUN. While the other haunted house looked really scary in the "you know there's a kid in a mask going to jump out at you" way, this was scary because there were so many good props and effects. In a lot of ways it reminded me of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. And he said that he tries to keep it fun for the kids in the neighborhood, rather than scaring them. He even built a "Whack-a-Ghoul" game, just like Whack-a-Mole. I really want to go back tonight to take pictures of it all, since he told us he won't begin tear-down till Saturday. I also have some friends coming over on Saturday, so I think I'll trek them all down there to check it out in the daytime as well. It was probably one of the coolest things I've seen for Halloween in years.
Family
I talked to my mom for the first time in a while last night. I guess there may be another offer on the table for their house here in Illinois. We'll see what happens. It's not my problem, so I'm not really getting involved. But they do need to sell before it sucks up too much of their money.
I had to ask about Grandma. I guess the last time my mom went to visit her, she didn't know who Mom was. :( I hate when relatives get like this. My great aunt Ellen was the same way. Mom and Dad didn't want me to visit her, because they wanted me to have good memories of her. But if I go up at Thanksgiving, I do want to go see Grandma at the home. I don't know if she'll remember me at all. In a way, I hope she doesn't so that I won't feel bad leaving her at the end of the visit. But having her not know me will hurt, too.
Anyway, I'll be doing a double Thanksgiving this year. Once again, the Scientist and I will be going to his grandma's house in Michigan for Thanksgiving dinner with his family. Luckily, though, they do theirs around 2:00. So afterwards we'll hop in the car, drive 45 minutes to my parents' house, and do another dinner there that night with them and all of my Michigan cousins.
Britney Spears
Oh, I listened to Britney's Blackout yesterday, and I have to say that I enjoyed it. A lot of it sounds like late 80s dance music. And yes, that's a good thing in my book. Her voice actually sounds pretty good on a lot of it, probably because she's been digitally manipulated by the studio to the Nth degree. There were a few times when I found myself thinking "That's Britney singing? Really?" So I don't know if I'm going to buy it, but I definitely think it's worth giving a listen to. MUCH better than her last few albums, I'll say that. And again, really fun, upbeat dance stuff. Who knew it would be good?
I know I was going to post about more stuff, but I honestly don't remember what that was. Oh well.
Much love to
deeablo and
jasminelily. I hope things get better for you both soon.
