Last night I went to the preview screening of I Love You, Man at the Vic Theater, which was a lot of fun. My friend Steve@theMovies was hosting the screening for AICN, which meant that we got to sit in the press row up front. The movie started later than it was supposed to, and there was an "opening act" called something like Bye Bye, Liver. It was supposed to be a combo of sketch comedy and drinking game, and it was... Well, the less said, the better. However, by delaying the start of the movie this padded enough time that Paul Rudd's plane was able to land, and he brought the director of I Love You, Man with him. So after the movie (which cracked me up) there was a Q&A with Jason Segel, Paul, and John Hamburg. Paul's funny enough on his own, but add in Jason and it was just a constant stream of laughter from the crowd.
The best part, however, was that during the Q&A someone asked if Jason would sing "Dracula's Lament" from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Jason was all "If there was a keyboard around, I would." Little did he know that the bad opening act had a keyboard, and so they raced backstage to get it and set it up. Jason had a complete deer-in-the-headlights look on his face when they hauled it out, as his bluff had been called. But he gamely took on the challenge, which led to the awesomeness you see below.
Afterwards there was a VERY quick autograph session, and so much thanks to Steve for getting me out of the crowd so that I could get my Freaks and Geeks yearbook autographed by Jason. If Steve hadn't done that, I wouldn't have gotten through to Jason in time. So I owe Steve big for that. Anyway, Jason seemed honestly pleased to see someone with the huge yearbook edition of the show, and he autographed it personally to me. I told him I was a big fan of HIMYM and never miss it on Mondays, and he told me thanks. That was it. Quick and simple, and I didn't make an ass of myself in front of an actor/writer who I really like. So overall, it was a great night.
The Vic, however, is not the greatest place to see a movie. They're a concert venue first and a second-run theater second, so their movie theater equipment sucks balls at best. Their projector bulb is dim, and the whole thing seemed to be a bit out of focus. On the drive home I realized my eyes weren't focusing properly, and I had a RAGING headache by the time I got in. Combine that with not eating dinner, and it was not good. But it was all worth it, because Jason signed my yearbook. YAY!!!
