Hey flist, I need suggestions in regards to vacuums. The Scientist's vacuum crapped out on him today, and so we're looking to buy a new one. However, these things are pricey, and for the amount of money we're going to spend we want to make sure we're getting a good one.

Our house has hardwood and tile floors downstairs (with area rugs), and full carpeting upstairs. I have a fluffy cat, so there's hair.

We'd prefer something bagless, as it's just easier what with the gobs of cat hair getting sucked up every time. I've heard great things about Dyson, but those are just too expensive. Consumer reports gave the Kenmore Progressive with Intelli-Clean a top review, but there were too many personal reviews on the Sears site saying that it crapped out within two years. That's not good. We also came across the Bissel Lift-Off Revolution, which is supposed to be good for pet hair, but we don't know much about it.

Needless to say, we have to do more research. But I thought I'd turn to you to see if any of you have suggestions for us. Is there any brand/model you'd recommend? Any you'd tell us to stay the hell away from? Any suggestions are welcome, and I appreciate the help in advance.

seriously, dyson.

Hey, I'll make the case for spending the bucks on a Dyson. It's a kick-ass vacuum. There are more than a few styles out there, and there's no need to buy the pet hair one; the regular yellow will do the trick. First, get a 20% off coupon for Bed Bath and Beyond. Then use it there to take a whole lot off the bill. Also, let me remind you, *someone* has an anniversary coming up, and though the 1st anniversary is supposed to be paper, maybe our gift could be a paper gift certificate to BB&B that you could put towards your purchase. Vacuums are normally expensive anyway, so you may as well invest well.

I agree! About the Dyson, at least. ;) Also, if you don't have a Home Depot credit card, you can usually get six months interest free and some percentage off of purchases over X dollars. That's what I did with our Dyson.

All right, I know you said bagless but I love my vacuum so much I have to tell you about it. It's the Eureka Boss with Hepa Filter and I bought it because it was a Consumer Reports best buy. I found mine at Costco for a little over a hundred bucks. This vacuum seriously sucks, in the best way.

But there are bags, so that's something to consider.

I used to have a really expensive Miele vacuum with filter and the Eureka works just as well for a fraction of the cost.
