eee1313: (Tim Gunn & the Emporer)
[personal profile] eee1313
I am really behind on my Project Runway wrap-ups. And I'm behind on the show, too. Last week I was feeling so ill that I actually didn't watch, and chose to sleep instead. I know, right? So on Thursday I'll be watching the rerun of episode 5, as well as the next episode 6.

Anyway, in case you care, here's what happened.

Episode 3 was the first team challenge episode this season. Can I just say that I HATE team challenges? Someone always gets screwed over because of their partner messing up. Anyway, the teams had to create a "California chic" look based on what a bunch of surfer girls said they'd like to wear (this included a swimsuit). Then, halfway through the challenge, Tim came in and said that they also had to create a haute couture avant garde look to go along with their first look. So here's what the designers came up with.

Althea & Louise
Totally fine. Kind of boring. If the second dress were red and had sequins, it would kind of remind me of my sister's prom dress.

Carol Hannah & Shirin
I don't remember what the wrap dress looked like that went over the bikini. Oh well. As for the gown, it's okay.

Christopher & Logan
I swear, Logan was wearing those shiny pants during the next episode. The big hat KILLS ME, and I kind of love how huge and gauzy the skirt is on the second dress. Points to them for at least tying the two looks together; they're one of the few teams were you can actually see how the two looks were styled similarly.

Nicolas & Gordana
I love the top of the first outfit. It's all macrame and was beautifully created. I also like the flowy pants -- this outfit looks like something you'd throw on over a swimsuit. As for the second outfit... If it didn't have the weird lace leggings/garter belt thing, I'd actually really like this. But as it stands, it just looks ODD.

Irina & Johnny
Cute! Again, points to these two for actually tying their two outfits together.

Qristyl & Epperson
These two COULD NOT work together. It was totally a case of two strong personalities fighting one another, and they both came out looking like whiny babies. One of these two would have been on the chopping block if it weren't for the final pairing. As for their outfits, whatever. I can't even remember what their haute couture avant garde design looked like.

Mitchell & Ra'Mon-Lawrence
The winner AND loser!
Okay, this was a SPECTACULAR twist. Mitchell has been driving me nuts for every single episode so far. When he was chosen at random to be a team leader, he picked Ra'Mon-Lawrence specifically because he was a better sewer than Mitchell and Mitchell admitted that he needed someone to carry him. Dude, if you can't sew, then WHY ARE YOU ON THE SHOW? You can't just sketch, you need to execute. So his admitting that he was using Ra'Mon-Lawrence pissed me off. Then he did nothing for the whole challenge, and Ra'Mon-Lawrence busted his ass to finish (even scrapping his first haute couture avant garde design and making this second dress on the fly). So when this all came out at judging that Mitchell did next to nothing, he got the boot even though his team made the winning look. ("What a twist!") Anyway, as much as I didn't get the love for Ra'Mon-Lawrence's neoprene dress, I'm really glad that he was rewarded for all his hard work.

This episode's challenge was to create a look for the models, who were to attend an industry party. The goal was to listen to their specific wants, make them stand out from the crowd of other models, and to still have the individual designers' aesthetics in the final look.

Althea
The winner
This was okay, but I'm not sold on its win. The model wanted a look with separates, including a smoking jacket tailored for her. I think having separates was a really smart idea, as it did make this model stand out against the others. However, I think the shirt under the jacket looked sloppy, and I didn't like the weird banding around the waist. Oh well.

Carol Hannah
This dress may not look good here, but it look FABULOUS when it was in motion. The colors were great, the detailing in the black was lovely, and there was a great pleated/vented fishtail detail on the back of the skirt which I loved. I think this should have won.

Christopher
God bless Christopher and his lack of training. He's proof that there is such a thing as natural talent. I love that he took what looked like a big lettuce leaf and made it into a pretty, eye-catching dress.

Epperson
This dress was COOL. He got a model who was all "I want something punk and romantic and sexy and demure and TIGER!" And he turned those directions into this. Good for him.

Gordana
Once again, Gordana produces something totally reliable with cool details. I fear, however, that her looks would be really plain without those details.

Irina
I have no recollection of this outfit whatsoever.

Johnny
Johnny made it to the bottom three with this. I agree that while it's totally acceptable and wearable as a dress, it's also something you could pick up at any mall, which is not the point of this whole shebang. He was really gracious in his judging, though, so points to him for either being a good guy or playing the game shrewdly and sucking up to the judges.

Logan
Logan was also in the bottom three due to this dress. His model wanted "Marilyn Manson/Cinderella," and Logan gave it to her. However, the judges hated this. In the end, I think he got through to the next round because a) at least it stood out, even if it was for the wrong reasons, and b) at least he branched out and did something out of his comfort zone instead of playing it safe.

Louise
Man, I do not like this. Neck ruffles are not good here.

Nicolas
This was GORGEOUS, until the model started moving. Then it had an unfortunate sideboob-ventilation problem.

Qristyl
The loser
This dress was perfectly fine, if you want a boring little black dress that looks like every other one-shoulder little black dress. The Scientist and I debated over who deserved to lose more: Logan for creating something ugly, or Qristyl for creating something immediately forgettable, as well as boring. I argued the latter was worse, and the judges agreed.

Ra'Mon-Lawrence
She looks like a bow on a birthday present. Nice color, though.

Shirin
Cute, and much better than the electric blue catsuit her model wanted.

FYI, in Episode 3, the second look was supposed to be avant garde, not haute couture.

Sigh, these were both pretty boring episodes -- there were a lot of pretty dresses in Episode 4, but most of them were pretty dresses that I've seen before and could find at any mall. That's why I loved both Epperson's and Carol Hannah's, because both of them were creative and cool.

Ah, okay! See, I kept thinking to myself, "None of these seem haute couture." That makes so much more sense now.

And yeah, kind of snooze-worthy. I hope things start picking up as more designers get picked off.

Hells, yeah!

Yep, you are SO right about that dress being a knock off of my prom dress. I am glad you're behind on this show too-- I hardly remembered these clothes from ep.3 and I didn't remember ANY from ep. 4 because I FELL ASLEEP WHILE WATCHING!!! I think that's more of a comment on it being a snooze-fest than on my being exhausted. I did wake up in time to see QkCriystahl get kicked off. Seriously, a Q?!?!?!? I still haven't watched ep. 5 yet, so thanks for not runining it for me!

I need to find a picture of your prom dress to compare/contrast.

And yes, this has been supremely boring so far. I think that the longer this competition goes on, the more competent designers they get. And qualified people with skills does not equal good TV viewing. Remember the days of Santino, or Keith Michael, or hell, even Wendy Pepper? That made for some good TV.

Hopefully once they weed down the pack, the personalities will come out more and it will make for more interesting viewing.
