Seriously?

Once again, your help is needed.

In the latest poll, there is currently something VERY STUPID happening. "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid is beating "When You Wish Upon a Star" from Pinnochio. Now, no matter what you may think of Pinnochio (*cough*[livejournal.com profile] spicedrum*cough*), you have to admit that its song should win. People, this is the theme of all things Disney. It's played during the intro to every Disney movie, ever, when they pan over the castle in the studio credit. If this song is good enough for the ENTIRE COMPANY to brand themselves with it, then IT SHOULD WIN. It should not get knocked out in round one by a song about a lovesick teenager wanting to find a new place to live because no one understands her, wah wah waaaaaaaaaaah.

So please. Do me a favor and go vote against "Part of Your World." It does not deserve to win. Thank you.

It so totally deserves to win! It is the song that signaled Disney coming back from over 20 years of crap animation. When You Wish Upon A Star is a boring song.

We're going to have to agree to disagree.

that song makes me want to purge
it sounds like a funeral dirge
I really like the sentiment
but. it's. too. slow.

=P

Honestly, I think both songs are OK - I'm just in a contrary mood. My Pinnochio hatred doesn't carry over to the song, but just because it's the Disney theme doesn't make it the best, or there'd be no reason for the poll. ;)

However, if you voted for that crap Oliver & Company song over the song from the Hunchback soundtrack, then I might have to throw down.

My issue with the soundtrack to Hunchback is that while the songs are AMAZING, almost none of them hold up on their own. You can't listen to the songs as separate entities, you need to know the whole story to make them work. I honestly think that Hunchback probably has the most amazing, complex score of ANY Disney film, ever. It doesn't play like a musical, it plays more like an opera, where the songs are intregal to the story. So many other Disney films have songs that advance the story, but aren't as woven into the story itself. It's like the difference between listening to a musical like Grease vs a musical like Les Miz. Except that I think several of the songs from Les Miz are standouts that you can listen to without needing to know the story, whereas most of the music from Hunchback requires you know the story for the songs to make sense.

My opinion of this whole poll is to view the songs on different criteria: 1) are they songs that can stand up on their own outside of the movie they're from? 2) are the songs timeless, something my parents would like as well as songs a five-year-old would like? 3) do the songs have a prominent role in Disney music history? That last one is more of the tiebreaker criteria for me, but the first two are the real clinchers.

You're taking it way more seriously than I am. I pick the ones I like best.

I am GWeezer, hear me roar!

I think that's why I'm so disappointed by the outcome of many matchups thus far. ;)

And here's something I've been wondering: do you think the age of the pollsters has an effect on how they're voting? Because there's this HUUUUUUGE outpouring for Hercules, and that movie and its songs just do not work for me. They're okay, but they're no classics, IMO. But I wonder if I were, say, ten years younger if that would change my mind. I didn't even see that movie until a year ago, so I'm more inclined to vote for stuff from the Golden Age of the Second Coming of Disney. Anything after The Lion King and I'm pretty much out.

I am an old fogey.

I think you're right. I could care less about Hercules (though I think the "I Won't Say I'm In Love" song is kinda cool), or Pocahontas, and even though I love the soundtrack to Hunchback, I hate that movie, too. Because I don't consider Pixar movies to be Disney movies, even though they've been bought out and merged and such, I think that after The Lion King, the second hey-day of animation at Disney ended. (with Mulan being the exception because that movie really grew on me, with all the times I had to watch it when I was working at daycare)

I have renewed hopes with The Princess and the Frog, which I really liked. It had a really good story and beautiful animation. The songs were by Randy Newman, however, and were thus just mediocre for the most part.

Same here. Not only was the animation GORGEOUS, it had a good story, good characters, and kept me entertained. I will agree with you on the songs, though.

I think it's a damn shame that more people didn't go to see this movie. I'm really, REALLY disappointed in the parents of America for not taking their kids to see PatF and instead flocking in droves to Alvin and the Chipmunks: the Squeakuel. Don't these parents CARE about what their kids are watching? Don't they WANT their kids to see movies with strong characters and good morals about friendship and hard work? Don't they REALIZE that if they give their kids garbage entertainment, they'll get garbage back from their kids? HELLO!!!

God, for serious. I have a few songs off the soundtrack in iTunes and even with those ones I do quite like, I keep thinking, "If they had given the same thematic direction to some other composer, I would be liking the output a hell of a lot more."

Why do they keep going back to the Newman well between Disney and Pixar? Whyyyyyyyy?

Ever see that post-apocalyptic Family Guy episode, where the Griffins meet Randy Newman? God, such a spot-on parody of Randy Newman's crappy songs. Love it.

YES. Hahaha.

But seriously stop hiring Randy Newman.

Someone else who hates Pinocchio, yay!

Also, I hadn't voted until I saw this post because I was so torn. I voted for Star to please eee, but I like Part of Your World as a song a lot better, so I might change my vote, we'll see.

To honor your wishes, I'm refraining from voting at all, because "Part of Your World" is one of my favourite Disney songs of all time, and I'm actually not overly fond of "When You Wish Upon a Star".
