Felicity rewatch, season 1

My sister-in-law J and I have been slowly working our way through season 1 of Felicity. She never watched it when it was on, and I only watched it sporadically, so watching it all again is kind of fun. And also full of frustration and ::facepalm:: moments.
Let's start at the beginning.
Ep. 1: Pilot
Synopsis: Ben writes some crap in Felicity's yearbook, and she changes her life plans to go to the same college as him in NYC. Ben is naturally surprised to see Felicity there because they weren't even friends. Cue parental drama, inner turmoil, etc. Felicy tells Ben she followed him, is all "Let's be friends!" Lame. Nearly everything happens in slow motion with plunky guitar music in the background.
Reactions: First off, how did Felicity even KNOW what school Ben was going to in the first place? It's never said. Second, she's an idiot. And a stalker. Enter Noel, whom I love despite his dorkitude. Cue the start of us going "duuuuuuuuuuuh" whenever Ben talks.
Ep. 2: The Last Stand
Synopsis: Felicity thinks Ben wanted to read her admissions essay (which was all about him) and she sends it to him in the mail. Psycho! Turns out her dad asked for it to find out why she changed her med school plans. Her parents fly out to NYC to talk with her, think she's nuts for following a boy, she and her mom bond over crap, blah blah blah.
Reactions: Felicity's parents sure have a lot of money to fly from California to NYC on a whim. They're also totally disfunctional and need better communication with their daughter, and vice versa. Felicity sending Ben her admissions essay is a major ::facepalm:: moment. Man, she's stupid. One bad decision after another, that girl. Also: JOHN CHO SPOTTING!
Ep. 3: Hot Objects
Synopsis: Noel likes Felicity who likes Ben who likes Julie. Felicity gets her undies in a bundle about Ben & Julie. She also gets in her professor's face, and when he's rude to her she just tries harder. At a dorm party, a tape Felicity made to Sally about having sex for the first time is played in front of everyone.
Reactions: Felicity needs to get over Ben already! She had no claim on him in the first place, so she has no right to get upset at Julie if Ben likes her. That's not Julie's fault. As for the deal with the prof, if Felicity is SO STUPID as to continually push her rude teacher into liking her, she DESERVES to have him come down hard on her. It's COLLEGE, Felicity. The man doesn't give a shit about you. Get used to it. And regarding the tape at the party: HA!!!!! Totally cringe-worthy, but considering right now we don't like Felicity, we found it to be a glorious schadenfreude moment.
Ep. 4: Boggled
Synopsis: Julie isn't interested in Ben and starts dating some dude named Zack. Ben doesn't make the track team. Noel kisses Felicity, they go on a date, he tells her he has a long-distance girlfriend named Hanna.
Reactions: Ben doesn't run fast enough. I don't care enough. Zack is Brian Krakow from My So-Called Life. Yay! Felicity makes a scene in the restaurant when Noel tells her about Hanna, because Felicity apparantly has no sense of when it is/is not appropriate to act like a damn fool.
Ep. 5: Spooked
Synopsis: Felicity gets a job at Dean & Deluca serving coffee. Felicity and Ben are robbed; both have PTSD about it and start hanging out all the time. Then Felicity sees Ben kissing another girl at a Halloween party and gets upset, thinking their traumatic bonding = love. Then she vomits on Noel. Also, Elena meets Blair.
Reactions: Dean & Deluca = Javier = AWESOME. There is truly not enough Javier on this show. Felicity is again STUPID for thinking that post-traumatic bonding = TRUE LOVE. Vomiting on Noel = priceless. Also, Felicity's Bride of Frankenstein Halloween costume is awesome. And the Pink Power Ranger reference still makes me laugh, as Amy Jo Johnson (Julie) was the original Pink Ranger.
Ep. 6: Cheating
Synopsis: Felicity rewrites Ben's paper without his knowledge. He's accused of plaigerism, is naturally pissed as hell at Felicity when she confesses. He won't let her go to the school, and instead pretends he's all edumacated and wrote it himself. Felicity busts into his "trial" and confesses, Ben is pissed, both fail.
Reactions: FELICITY IS STUPID. Seriously! What is wrong with this girl? What is with her attitude that she can always help everyone, when everything we've been shown proves that she just fucks things up more? She needs to keep her nose out of other people's business already. Why are people even friends with her? OMG. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE.
Ep. 7: Drawing the Line, Part 1
Synopsis: Noel tells Felicity that he won't listen to her moon over Ben any more. Blair gets Felicity to read Elena's files from admissions for him, and Felicity discovers that Elena's scholarship money didn't come through. She finds another scholarship for Elena, who is pissed that Felicity read her personal files. Noel convinces Elena to swallow her pride and take the scholarship. Julie and Zack go on another date, and he date rapes her.
Reactions: WHY ARE PEOPLE FRIENDS WITH FELICITY???? How does she continue to keep her job in admissions when she's CONSTANTLY rifling through confidential materials? She's HORRIBLE. Also, the scenes with Noel learning to "draw a line" with Felicity are annoying, but the other RAs are awesome. I'd watch a show with them in the lead roles.
Ep. 8: Drawing the Line, Part 2
Synopsis: Julie tells Felicity she was date raped, cue after school special talks about it. Felicity tells Noel (of course), word spreads, Julie is humiliated. Zack becomes TOTALLY CREEPY and tries to convince Julie he didn't do it. Ben beats the snot out of Zack. Zack admits he did it and drops out rather than face further repercussions for raping Julie.
Reactions: First off, Ben is my hero for beating up Zack. (Violence isn't the answer, but sometimes it's awesome.) For once, Felicity not keeping her damn mouth shut was a good thing, as it got Julie to get counselling and not blame herself for the rape. Zack just quitting school is TOTAL BULLSHIT, however. NOT ENOUGH. Grrrrrr!
Ep. 9: Thanksgiving
Synopsis: Felicity stays in NYC for Thanksgiving to keep Julie company. Noel's girlfriend Hanna comes to visit, Noel gets goofy, Felicity gets pissed. Noel and Felicity end up making out, Ben catches them but they don't know. Noel and Hanna break up.
Reactions: First appearance of Jennifer Garner as Hanna. I think this role is why I CANNOT STAND Jennifer Garner. Also, Javier brings a turkey!
Ep. 10: Finally
Synopsis: Noel and Felicity promise not to kiss until after finals, so that they can study and not be distracted. Cue lots of studying, lots of wacky hijinx in the library. Noel takes Meghan's "smart powder" and goes nuts, complete with crazy soundtrack throughout his scenes. Noel has to go away before he and Felicity can decide where they stand as a couple. Ben doesn't tell Felicity he's staying in NYC with Julie for winter break.
Reactions: The "smart powder" bits are some of my favorite scenes on this show. Good use of subtitles and GIANT subtitles throughout the library scenes. Nice cliffhanger with Ben and Julie in bed together. Dun dun dunnnnn!
Ep. 11: Gimme an O!
Synopsis: Felicity decides to have sex with Noel, but because she's a nutbag their first attempt is a disaster. Ben and Julie's friendship has turned into almost-romantic. Felicity finds out Ben & Julie are together and freaks out, Noel realizes she's still not over Ben and leaves her high and dry in a hotel room. Also, Elena gets a weird gift from Blair.
Reactions: Felicity is STUUUUUUUUUUUUPID! She's supposed to be having sex with Noel for the first time ever, and instead she's on the phone with Julie? WHATEVER! Ugh. Also, good for Noel for leaving her ass all alone, he doesn't need to be her consolation prize. Also, Tangi Miller (Elena) has an amazing ass -- she wore a headband as a skirt, and it STILL looked good.
Ep. 12: Friends
Synopsis: Elena's random BFF shows up, Felicity sees this girl and Blair kissing. For once, Felicity stays out of it, but Blair (fearing being outed) confesses but claims it's innocent. Felicity's put in the middle, Elena gets pissed at Felicity, but later recants. The two catch Blair and BFF on a date and making out.
Reactions: I'll give it to Felicity, it looks like she's FINALLY learning to stay out of people's business. It only took how many fuck-ups? Sheesh. The plot with the BFF seems totally fabricated just to break up Blair and Elena. Maybe if we'd heard of BFF before, it would mean more. Also: Donal Logue spotting!
Ep. 13: Todd Mulcahey, Part 1
Synopsis: Todd Mulcahey, a guy Felicity knew when they were preteens, shows up demanding a kiss. He believes they're soul mates and a kiss would confirm if they belong together. Meanwhile, Julie takes an intern job at the office where her birth mother works, but doesn't tell the woman Julie might be her daughter. The episode ends with Todd being hit by a bus.
Reactions: AWESOME! Bus almost-death! Also, now Felicity knows what it's like to be stalked, and what it's like when someone thinks you have a connection when you don't. How's it feel, stalker girl? Huh??? Also, Julie is setting herself up for major drama taking that job. (And why would an architecture firm hire an intern who's a music major, anyway?) Jane Kaczmarek sighting.
Ep. 14: Todd Mulcahey, Part 2
Synopsis: Todd's near-death prompts Felicity to reevaluate her life. She now wants to be an artist again and not a doctor, a decision which results in her blowing the interview for a prestigous seminar. Ben takes a job at Dean & Deluca. Julie sends her birth mom a tape telling her she's her daughter, but her birth mom tells her it's all a mistake. Felicity witnesses Todd's recovery at the hospital and decides she wants to be a doctor again, and somehow the prestigious professor still lets her in the seminar despite being wishy-washy.
Reactions: First off, the kind of stuff they're supposed to do in this seminar is NOT the kind of stuff first-year pre-med students would be doing. I ran this by the Scientist (since it's all gel blotting and DNA stuff) and he was like "no way, not first year." Also, I cannot fathom why the prof would allow Felicity into the seminar just because she had some epiphany at the hospital. She's already changed her mind once. If this were such a big deal, the guy would be like "If you're not certain, then I'm giving this shot to someone who is." But of course, it's Felicity, so things work out for her. >:( Chris Sarandon is the prof, so J and I had a lot of fun talking like Prince Humperdink during this episode. On hand as a random art student is Simon Rex (remember him?), as well as Taraji P. Henson as another art student. Back to the story, with Ben working at Dean & Deluca, there's now a lot of Javier calling him "Benjameeeeeeeeeeeen," which I love. ::draws hearts around Javier::
Ep. 15: Love and Marriage
Synopsis: Javier is going to be deported, so Felicity decides to marry him so he can get his green card. Noel's brother shows up and comes out, and Noel is a total dick about it. In the end, Javier's boyfriend Samuel gets a transfer to Madrid, so they leave for Spain. Booooooo! Noel apologizes to his brother for being a dick.
Reactions: I LOVE JAVIER. That is all. Also, Noel's brother is played by Eddie McClintock from Warehouse 13.
Ep. 16: The Fugue
Synopsis: Ben tries out and gets on the swim team. Hanna shows up at Dean & Deluca; it seems she's been in NYC all this time! Dun dun dunnn! Noel gets confused about Hanna, he and Felicity break up. Noel changes his mind about Hanna right before having sex with her. Felicity is dejected and has sex with the random art student from before.
Reactions: An entire episode of people making stupid decisions!!! And Hanna is a big old sneaky bitch, kissing Noel even when she knows he and Felicity are together. Felicity having sex in the art studio made me laugh. I kept wanting Taraji P. Henson to show up in the middle of it and be like "Damn, girl, I know how that feels!" (which was her one line from her previous appearance). Dash Mihok is Ben's swim buddy Lynn.
Ep. 17: Assassins
Synopsis: Noel shows up and is all "I didn't sleep with Hanna, yay me!" And Felicity is all "I slept with some dude." And Noel is like "UR A HOR! I H8 U!" Then he tries to make up while drunk, and she's not having it, and it's a whole big thing. In the end, they break up. Side plot: the dorm is playing Assassins, and Elena is on the warpath.
Reactions: Okay, it takes two to tango here. Not to use the Ross Gellar excuse, but Felicity thought she'd been dumped, so Noel can't be all pious here. Yes, she slept with someone she barely knew, but that was because he stomped all over her heart and she felt bad and was vulnerable. Also, Noel was naked and on top of his ex before he called it quits, so it's not like he's a monk here. So this whole thing just annoys me. SERIOUSLY. Not that it's all Noel's fault that Felicity ran off and had sex with some dude, but REALLY. :| Needs more Elena.
Ep. 18: Happy Birthday
Synopsis: Noel's heart is broken, so he'staking his ball and going home resigning as RA and moving out. Ben begins gambling to make rent money. Meghan's parents show up, and she goes from goth to Rebecca of Sunnyside Farm. Meanwhile, it's Julie's birthday, and her birth mom shows up and tells her Julie has to be kept a secret. Turns out her birth mom never told the birth dad (played by Kaczmarek's then-husband Bradley Whitford) about Julie EVER, so when they got married a few years after Julie was put up for adoption, it would be AWKWAAAAAARD. Julie realizes she has parents who love her already, and all is well. Big party in the dorm, Felicity gives Noel the "you can't leave New York" speech he gave her in Episode 1. Everyone parties, all is well.
Reactions: This is the big "everyone's conflicts get resovled" episode. (Except for Ben, whose conflicts are just starting.) The C plot with Meghan is full of LOLs.
Let's start at the beginning.
Ep. 1: Pilot
Synopsis: Ben writes some crap in Felicity's yearbook, and she changes her life plans to go to the same college as him in NYC. Date: 2010-02-10 10:03 pm (UTC)I keep telling J that after season 1 it gets better. She's only in it for the season 4 time travel/Felicity gets institutionalized episodes, anyway. Whenever Felicity goes something dumb, I have to remind J that I'm in it for Meghan, Sean, and Javier. Seriously, I would watch The Meghan, Sean, & Javier Show every day of my life. Elena, too.
