You knew it was coming

It’s my annual Oscar Fashion Recap! Get ready, people.
I was undecided on Sandra Bullock’s dress at first, but wow, did it dazzle on stage. It was all glittery and classy. And I’m glad she kept her hair down and sleek--very classy. Her lipstick appeared to change color from red to orange to purply-pink throughout the night, depending on the lighting. Strange.
As always, Penelope Cruz looks fabulous.
Meryl Streep looks pretty good, considering she normally dresses like a mess. Love the dress (a Chris March original!), but hate the shoes.
Kate Winslet looks... okay? I don't know, something about this dress I don't quite like on her. I think it's the weird way it dips down at the waist in the front, accentuating her hips oddly. It almost seems one step away from being a dress you'd see in a sci-fi movie. I think it's the metallic fabric combined with the tightness combined with the odd lines of the gown. It's not bad, it's just ... off?
Oh, Gabby, ILU! While doing her red carpet interview with Ryan Seacrest, she told him that if the red carpet fashions were porn, her dress would be "the money shot." BWA!!! Seriously, love her. I'm so glad she got a pretty gown that flattered her in all the right ways. (I also hope she doesn't become a one-hit wonder, because I think she's awesome and hilarious and I want to hang out with her.)
I really, really, really don't know what to think of SJP's look. The dress was definitely interesting, but I don't know if that's good or bad. Her hair, while definitely huge and awesome, got funkier and funkier as the night went on. I really don't know about this dress with the tinfoil flower detail (though I love the color).
Another dress that seems to be controversial belonged to Jennifer Lopez. And I'm going to surprise you all by saying that I LOVE IT. Seriously. I love the weird structural stuff happening, I love the color, I love the shimmer, and I love the massive train and side-bustle. Yes, really. Call me crazy, I don't care. Not many women can pull off the fashion risks that JLo does, and she's one of the few who can do really different, high-fashion dresses. I thought she looked fantastic.
Charlize Theron, on the other hand... Oy. My sister-in-law J called her dress "cupcake icing boobies."
yakgirl also had a choice comment about this. Even Mr. Jay from ANTM was like "It distracts from her face and puts all the focus on her chest, and that's bad." Dude, when Mr. Jay thinks it's too much, it's too much. (Love the color, though.)
Mariah Carey's dress was just dull. She had to hold it together at her thigh for fear of having the slit flat open and show us her goods. It's called double-sided tape, Mariah, look into it. I guess we should be happy she doesn't show up dressed like Beyonce in some horrible sequined monstrosity, but I'd like to see her glam it up more. (Also, did she Botox the hell out of her face, or what? She looks strange to me now.)
I don't know what to think of Carey Mulligan here. I don't like the way the dress is higher in front and has the big train in the back; that style reminds me of the prom gowns that were so popular in 1991. I think if the hem was floor-length all around I'd like it more, though this must be easier to walk in. I love her shoes. My biggest problem with Carey is those giant earrings with that hair. Those earrings are wearing her, not the other way around.
For once, Cameron Diaz looks good.
yakgirl swears she's seen this dress before, and while it's pretty it isn't a showstopper by any means. But Cameron looks great, having a) brushed her hair for a change and b) worn appropriate makeup. Normally her body is great and she's a mess from the neck up. Here, she got it all right. Should she really get a pass for, apparantly, showering before leaving the house? Hey, I'll take what I can get from her.
Color me surprised: KStew actually looks good. She doesn't have bedhead, she doesn't have makeup that makes her look like she has a fever, and SHE ACTUALLY SMILED. Not in this picture, but believe me when I say she SMILED and WAVED on the red carpet. It's a Festivus miracle! Seriously, though, this dress is very pretty. Love the gathering, love the color, love that it's just body-hugging enough to be sexy without being slutty. Good job, Kristen. Now don't be so sour all the time.
I kind of like Demi Moore's look. The dress is crazy with the bandage-dress bodice and the ruffly bottom. (Despite what I said about that hemline on Carey Mulligan, it works well on this dress.) I don't think anyone else could have pulled this off, though. Demi's got a crazy-awesome body, and I think this dress works because of that, not because of the dress itself. I just hate that the color matches her skin.
Quentin Tarantino is wearing tails. And steel-toed wingtips. :( I guess we should just be happy he's not in a nehru jacket or something. Quinton Aaron, on the other hand, looks like a class act all the way.
I do not like Vera Farmiga's dress AT ALL. It reminds me of foil cupcake liners. I'll give her credit for not wearing white, black, or some variation of skintone like she has at every other public appearance she's made for Up in the Air. But I still don't like this.
Anna Kendrick, however, followed the same pattern that she's done for all of HER Up in the Air appearances by wearing something that's skin-toned and washes her out completely. Anna, you're better than this dress.
Is it just me, or is Zak Efron starting to look Seacrest-ish?
Welcome to my most hated dress of the night: Zoe Saldana. Wow, do I hate this dress. I hate the giant Muppet-fur ruffles. I hate the tri-tone color effect. I hate that there's so much POOF at the bottom, and then it becomes this sleek, asymetrical, sequined column on top. I just hate everything about this. Blech.
Woody Harrelson looks good. But I'm mostly pointing him out because his suit is made from 100% hemp. Oh, Woody. Don't ever change.
Anyone else think Morgan Freeman came across as skeevy? The gum chewing, the sunglasses, the ladies with bad hair on either arm, the fact that his daughter is named Morgana? Just me? Moving on.
What is up with Keanu's patchy beard? I knew a guy in my college dorm whose beard grew in all patchy like this, and we nicknamed him "Mangey." Just sayin'.
While I dislike James Cameron, I liked that his pocket square matched his wife's dress which matched the Avatar blue. I also think Jason Reitman looks okay. Both men, however, could use a haircut.
And speaking of hair, how awesome is Jeff Bridges' silver mane? I'll give him a pass on a haircut, just because it's well-coiffed. But I don't get his Wyatt Earp facial hair. (Side note: I like his wife's dress, as well as the turquoise jewelry with the black gown. Way to accessorize, lady!)
Sigourney Weaver looks great, especially at her age. Seriously, the woman looks better than me.
I have such a crush on Sam Worthington. He had to wear glasses to read the TelePrompter! However, his date's dress is ATROCIOUS.
Mo'Nique looked lovely. Great color, great style. I wish I hadn't seen the bit on the Barbara Walters special when Mo'Nique talked about not shaving her legs and having an open marriage. I don't know her, I don't need to know that. It makes me more appreciative of celebrities who don't share every detail of their lives with the public.
Paula Patton and Robin Thicke both look weird.
There's something about Nicole Richie's look that I like. It's basically a crazy sequined caftan, but I like this. I think the sexiness of the dress having no back was, unfortunately, diminished by her angel wing tattoos. :\
Miley Cyrus: NO. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. Forget Zoe Saldana's dress. THIS is my most-hated dress of the night. NO NO NO A THOUSAND TIMES NO. I would say "Shouldn't your mother have made you change clothes before you left the house, so you don't look like you're going out in a corset and no top?" But then I saw Miley's mom and realized she looks like a big old ho herself, so I shouldn't be surprised. (I forget whom it was, but some guy celebrity saw Miley's mom while they were talking to Seacrest, and the guy made a total "OH HELL NO" face at her. It was awesome.) And finally, Miley needs better posture. STOP HUNCHING YOUR SHOULDERS, YOU ENTITLED BRAT.
Credit to the Cloons for shaving off that monstrous beard. (And no,
yakgirl, I'm not talking about Elisabetta Canalis.) But the hair. THE HAIR! George, your hair is awful.
Considering that Maggie Gyllllllenhaaaaaaal usually looks like a hot mess, I'll give her a thumbs up here. Though I do not like her choice in lipstick. Peter Sarsgaaaaaaaaard is wearing a waistcoat, and isn't the only guy sporting this old-school tux look at the Oscars this year. Interesting trend in menswear.
Diane Kruger always wears something weird, and she did not disappoint here. WEIRD. Though I almost think we've seen her wearing this before? (Also, where's Josh Jackson?)
While I'm really tired of the one-shouldered dress look, Tina Fey looks really good. (MUCH better than the Golden Globes.)
Lenny and Zoe Kravitz both look good. I'm mostly including this because I love Zoe's dress and hair.
Tom Ford looks great in his Tom Ford tux. I love the carnation in his lapel -- why do men never do this any more?
I really like Rachel McAdams's dress. She needs different accessories, though, maybe a simple necklace? (Also, this photo must have been taken earlier in the night, as she had a major hair flyaway by the time she got to her Seacrest interview. She even had it when she presented. SOMEONE in that building had to have hairspray.)
Molly, I love you, but I'm not sure what's happening here.
OMG! Photographic evidence of Miley's whorish mother! Look in the background, all the way to the left. Check out the WTF face on the girl in the beige dress. LOL!!!
Amanda Seyfried's dress was gorgeous. However, when I saw her present in it, I kind of wondered if the dress wasn't wearing her. (Also, bigger earrings to draw attention up to your face, Amanda. I'm looking at your dress and not YOU.) Still, SO PRETTY.
Hello, gorgeous. Also, remember what I was saying about celebs who keep their private lives private? He's number one, with a bullet. Where's his wife? Somewhere else, because he and Scarlett don't want people to even REMEMBER that they're married, they're so private. LOVE HIM.
I love these two. Steve looks great, but I wish Nancy would have stepped it up a few notches.
There is a lot going on with Elizabeth Banks here, but it works. The dress has so much structure at the top that the crazy ruffled bottom works.
Look! It's Henry Selick, the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas! (Nominated here for Coraline, which was also good.) YAY!
Can someone tell me why Mariska Hargitay was there?
WHUT.
Awwww, how cute are the Gyllllllllllenhaaaaaaaaaaaaaals?
How awkward was Kathy Ireland during the preshow? Wow.
Who is Deborah Ann Woll, and why did she pick a dress that makes her look so gangly and pasty?
Oh, Sherri Shepherd. You need to hang out with Mo'Nique or Queen Latifah and learn how to dress better.
Check it out! James Taylor's wife Christine is wearing almost the exact same dress as James Cameron's wife Suzy Amis. Awkward!
Here's Helen Mirren looking, as always, like a total hotass. Also, old Captain Von Trapp!
Virginia Madsen, bringing the fug, as always. Poor thing, she just doesn't have good taste.
Giuliana Rancic's boobs were out of control in this dress. It was as if she were to sneeze, they'd pop out.
While I don't think Kathryn Bigelow's dress was quite enough for the Oscars, I'd rather she look understated and classy than a crazy mess. Still, she looks good.
ILU, Colin! Thanks for being so classy.
I ask this question in all seriousness: did this guy get CGI muscles in Avatar?
Stay classy, Marc Anthony. (At least he's not flashing the Shocker?) Also, I think I have him and JLo figured out: He's her portrait of Dorian Gray. The older she gets, the better looking she gets, and the more corpse-like he becomes. I'm on to something here.
These two are my favorite pair right now. I don't care if they look goofy, they just look like they have so much fun together. ::draws hearts around them::
Queen Latifah = GORGEOUS.
As for the awards themselves, I can't say I was all that surprised. All the big awards went exactly where everyone predicted. I'm rather surprised Avatar got shut out as much as it did; I expected more technical awards to go its way. (Can't say I'm upset at the virtual shutout, though.) It's strange when the biggest surprise of the night is in the Foreign Movie category. As for the show itself, other than seeing the NPH at the start, it was rather snooze-worthy. Blessedly quick for the Oscars, though.
I was undecided on Sandra Bullock’s dress at first, but wow, did it dazzle on stage. It was all glittery and classy. And I’m glad she kept her hair down and sleek--very classy.
