I love Ray Bradbury. The more I learn about him, the more I love him. Tell me you've read Fahrenheit 451, right? It is just so chock-full of awesomeness that I discover new things every time I read it and teach it. I am always blown away by all of the technology he envisioned-- did you know that 451 was supposed to be set in 1999, which was coincidentally the first year I taught it? The kids were shocked that he was able to think up all of the gadgetry-- one actually asked if I thought people like Steve Jobs read his books and then tried to make the fantasy a reality. I always meant to send him a letter asking that question...
Also, I know we had to read Dandelion Wine in 10th grade-- I still love that book. It's so different from 451, but still so affecting. I just learned that he wrote a sequel to it in 2006-- Forever Summer-- I just put it on order at the library (which was where Bradbury wrote 451; at a 10-cents-an-hour typewriter in his local library). Can't wait to get it.
It was a pleasure to burn is one of my favorite opening lines. Mr. Ray Bradbury, it was a pleasure! RIP
